After a real lazy day yesterday, I drag myself down the workshop in an effort to get the Big One back on the road,
Hopefully today If I can but in next few days if I cant.
But best laid plans..................................
the replacement big one thermostat housing I brought yesterday arrived this morning, so I started to strip it down.
Apart from a missing thermostat, that I knew about, it in pretty good order,
this one is from a 95, and one of the housings is slightly different
So I start to strip down the thermostat housing from the CBR1000f Hurricane I broke.
It's in need of a real good clean, but at this stage, I do not know what parts I will be using.
but thermostat comes out easily and opens when it should in boiling water
so will probably use this thermostat..
So I am gonna build one out of the 3 - hopefully I should end up with a good one at the end.
I clean up the mating surface and the thermostat
I remove the rubber O ring that's as flat as a pancake!
I select the best one
(must buy some more and put on the shelf)
After cleaning up the top housing I carefully put clear silicone in the grove and leave for 10 mins
Mean while, I undo one of the rack mount holder bolts and after cleaning give it a dose of torque seal
that's this one done
and this side soon follows.
Hopefully this will stop these bolts from coming loose again.
I gently pat the o-ring into place, it nicely sits proud now
and bolt it all together
Selecting the best rubber pipes
I thought this was a bodge job, but whats the chance of the other Big One I brought being the same?
Ready to be fitted to the bike
and its soon worked into place and the housing holder is bolted back in place
and finally onto the frame
mmmm this temp sensor wire is on the wrong side! and also has the wrong end fitted!
So i cut of the extra wire that was added at the connector and use a new 4mm bullet connected and rubber seal and it fits a treat
I do up all the rad pipes
put back the drain bolt
and re install the Expansion water bottle
on goes the expansion bottle pipe, after i cut the last 1/2 inch off, so it fits tighter
and its time to put some more fuel in the funnel and fire it up, and keep topping up the rad, till all air pockets are gone.
Putting on the petrol tank, although its nearly empty, its still big heavy and unwieldy on your own
The piece of wood allows just enough room to fit and screw up the fuel pipe and put on the vacuum pipe
feed thru and remount the fuel tap
and fasten the petrol tank mount plate to the frame
the screws on the rear brake reservoir are fucked - typical previous owner has either over tightened them or used wrong size posi driver - so I cant get them out
Norton Commando - I hate it when people make things worse. Due to their not knowing what they are doing.
Time to delve into the boxes under the workbench!
the wrong air box cover i fitted the other day
The correct cover is found and now fitted
single piston caliper - rear brake fades after being used a couple of times to nothing or is it down to the limited use of ankle movement ??
Norton Commando - That is a must repair/fix.
Stephen Osborn - Yep will stat on it next week, parts are pretty worn on this caliper and cant afford new ones, the ones in the twin caliper look almost new
the one taken from CBR1000f Hurricane, ok its twin piston but has good pads.
so will fit and use my pipes as these too short.
The bloody master cylinder is too big to fit on my frame let alone allow me to refit the tail pieces
Norton Commando - This doesnt sound like fun.
Stephen Osborn - I have found correct master cyl but wont be here till Monday - so no ride this weekend.
I nip up to the house and in about 20 mins find one on Ebay for £15.00 inc postage, so now gotta wait for it to arrive.
The front caliper I have that I was gonna replace my seized one turns out to be the wrong caliper so once again back on Ebay and I find one so now waiting for that to arrive.
Charging - its NOT! only 12.8 volts with lights on 13.2 with lights off - I may try n ring Chris to see if he can nip over n sort as he can probably find the problem far quicker than i can.
A replacement alternator arrived today, I have 2 good reg/rec units and battery's good.
that's it today a promising start that's fizzled into failure, gonna chill for a bit then take my frustration out on guitar
Norton Commando - This sounds like a good start. Time working with your AX is a good thing to take your mind off the Bike.
Stephen Osborn - yep if i get stuck on bike or waiting for parts, will start to sort thru these boxes as have plenty of empty containers and some shelf space.
