22nd October 2022 - Various Hobbies - Computer

Afternoon Folks.

Last night and today have been a very busy and frustrating time for me on the Computer front.

I did a update to the latest release of "Ubuntu to 22.04.01 Jammy" without thinking about it, as it has never been an issue doing these upgrades before.

For the first time they have released a major O/S update, that is very buggy, almost like Microshite does. My Graphics card kept freezing,

PLEASE NOTE...
The solutions below worked for me, They may NOT work for you !!
Accept NO liability or responsibility for any issues, that may be caused by you following my resolution.
PLEASE PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK USING "uBUNTU'S OWN FORUMS" AS THERE MAY BE A MORE SPECIFIC RESOLUTION,

ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE USING DIFF HARDWARE COMPONENTS!

But this then throws up other issues,

I did try to install 3rd party drivers ETC manually,

but most refused to install PROPERLYand were full of errors.

The issue with my Nvidia Graphics card is well known,

and the only way around it at this point is to "NOT TICK THE 3RD PARTY DRIVERS OPTION”

during installation.
This issue is being looked at bu Ubuntu and I presume NVIDIA, but when a resolution will be I just do not know.

All I can suggest is to keep an eye on teh forums or Ubuntu's Updates..

Another main issue for me - I Couldn’t get my old Epson SX405 to Print!

It kept freezing up and so many utils, apps I use just would not work,

as well as other issues, I won’t bore you with.

Whilst trying to get my printer to work, the computer froze! That was one time too many !!

I did a reinstall only to notice loads of mistakes in the install,

and thought I would see if I could go back to the Ubuntu release that I know worked.
But that hang in the install process, apparently when you have installed the latest Ubuntu release, you cannot go backwards, without using a diff Harddrive.

As I use 2 x M2’s screwed to my motherboard for speed and great access times, this was a non starter as the 2nd M2 is full up of films, and backups taken from various programs from the old install.

So if like me you use a mix of old and new computer components ( I still build mine)

then "DO NOT" accept or install Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy release! at this stage.
At least without taking a full backup 1st or to a new drive ETC.

Ubuntu release 10.04 – would not install at all, it just hang and after 2 hours gave up.

I did find Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS (Wayland) Jammy,

so I downloaded the Iso and burned it to a DVD, rebboted my computer and prayed.

There were a few errors on install, but nothing I could do about at that time as it’s automated.
(Again I did NOT tick the 3rd Party Option)

The Graphics card Driver issue is no longer a problem, and now works 100%

Also many other issues no longer there, But still the printer would not print, Altho Ubuntu says it is.

Looking on UBUNTU’s forums and several people also had this issue,

resolved by going to Epsons website and there are 2 x drivers there.

The 2nd one actually listed my printer

(took ages to find as there are 100’s of printers to search thru in text format only and badly laid out).

But did a manual install and pressed test print and hey presto the printer works :) :)

This is the 1st time I have come up against this issue, since I dumped Microshite way back when I 1st tried Ubuntu 9.01.

Even today I would not go back to Microshite, why pay for an O/S and then the programs you need, when most of it is freeware, or asks for donations.

Now hopefully I can carry on recovering information from faulty hard drives and finally finish the maintenance build.
