23rd July 2011 - Kurgan - Suzuki GS1000E - Custom

Published on 19 January 2023 at 01:42

Hi Folks.........

Monday saw Kurgan at the Mot station, not that I was confident, but was hoping I had done enough to scrape it thru and then I could finish it over the next week or 2.

Unfortunately Conrad found too many faults, some I wasn't aware of and some solving problems that I was experiencing.

so now its back down the workshop to make a start to resolve all these issues.

The first job will be the fork seals.

I thought these were good as they were replaced by bike shop last year before I fitted them to Kurgan.

I knew the front brakes were very poor - but I thought was oil n grease from when i fitted them,

But it turns out both fork seals are pissing oil all over the both calipers !

Looks dry but on removal pads soaking wet

I started to strip the front end down, but soon realised that the front end was not std gs1000 - but gs1000ET.

Off comes the capilers - complete at this stage.

and out comes the front wheel - both discs have a liberal coating of oil on them

mmmmmmmmmmm this isnt there on std gs1000 legs and until i got a manual covering the ET range hadn't a clue how to remove it.

Brought a hayne's manual for £1.00 at charity shop that covers the ET and the black knob at the bottom just pulls off it looks like a total dismantle to change the seals.

It was so simple I kicked myself it just pulls off !

Sybil Lucas-Brewer - well fancy that lol

Of fit comes there's a small amount of oil on the inside & more worrying water

according to the manual there's a circlip here but i couldn't see it - so go n get me glasses - oh yes there it is !

mmmmmmmmmmmmm not seen anything like this - time for a break n read the manual i think - give me girders any day !

Off comes the top plug and the seal n spacer

and tip the oil out into a container.

The oil looks like crap and there's some water around the top seal and under the bottom damper

mmmm silicone in the oil not a good thing me thinks

Sybil Lucas-Brewer - Bodged job at some time

remove the dust seal and if yo

When you push n pull the top yokes in n out you can see & hear the oil/air getting pass the oil seal

found some dowling just the right length

inserted into the tube and refitted the top bolt - that stopped the centre bush from moving.

A few smacks on the T bar and the nuts loose

and apart it all comes.

mmmmmm I think the fork seal is upside down !

Surely the side that's solid should be at the top !

A quick phone call to Doug confirms this!

Doug Ashburn - pmsl ..........not saying nothing mr creature !

Stephen Osborn - hahahahahahahaa Chicken!

Out comes the seal and I give the seat a good wipe around to remove old oil & residue.

That shim you can just see was sitting proud nearly 2mm on one side a quick tap with large socket and hammer soon has it flush with the seal seat.

Thats better

I believe this is the way the seal should have been installed !

I have new seals that I will be fitting, a quick look around and I notice that I dont have any fork oil. Hope the car factor shops do will try n pick some up tomorrow.

That's it for today as i am struggling to breathe so a nice radox bath early nite and hopefully get a good session in tomorrow..

Les Banjo Crocker - can't you enlist some help mate?

Stephen Osborn - I wish

Jeff Sam Cro Boardman - sell it on ebay

Les Banjo Crocker - nastyJeff
