Finally got of my fat lazy arse earlier this evening and got down the workshop.
Now not saying I was gonna do anything, just needed to get out of the house for a bit, so thought, i would go n sit down there put my feet up n listen to Planet Rock
I took with me the replacement front master cylinder from its little cousin the 400 project four.
Altho they looked the same, its always nice to confirm that they are identical , I will have to keep an eye open as they go for about half the price than the cb1000 Big One.
A job for another day tho
mmmmmm I feel like doing more
Only not as easy as it looks as no room to feed bulky looms thru let alone with a fuse box that don't come off the loom
The relays a good un, so have removed it
there's just no room between the rear inner mudguard and frame, so its hunt the mount bolts time.
I thought I would get on with things, i can do sitting down, whilst listening to Planet rock, off comes the petrol tap unit, I must try n remember to swap the cables round! as they are the wrong way
Once again a handy bit of 2x1 baton serves me well as a petrol tank prop
after removing fuel pipes the tanks off and stood against the workbench.
So decide to make a start on removing the old us spec loom from the back
Norton Commando - What are you replacing with ?
rear lights and indicator wires removed - they had a mind of there own, if they were gonna work or not!
looked like it might snap, but came apart easily
and this side, but still the bloody mudguard wont move much
Of comes the ICU box
Out comes the battery which I find another 2 bolts holding things together
the battery box looks part of the mudguard, so i undo this top right side bolt
bloody air box side covers in the way
and off comes the seloniod
few connectors hidden and looks like a orange wire has been added - It's starting to make sense now as there are two in the headlamp shell, one of them that don't work!
and this one
not now !
Norton Commando - What a pain in the Arse.
cable tie holding loom to the frame
but still don't move,
finally caught a glimpse of this bolt
and it all pushes downwards leaving plenty of room to remove the loom
Pulling the loom thru
Loom is now free to the air box
bloody tax disc holder is in the way
(not much longer now and we wont need them at all)
but the bloody fuse box wont go thru at all!
If the loom wont come forwards anymore, then logic dictates it must go backwards !
think that's right
Scotty ?????????
and I decide to take the headlamp shell off as well, hoping it will make things easier later on
left handle bar switch gear wires are removed
which slides out so much easier than the rear
nearly forgot about the ignition coil
and were ready to pull back some more
mmmmm this was just laying under the carbs - terminals well dirty - so not connected to anything, will have to look at wiring diagram carefully when i install the replacement loom.
I bloody hate wiring diagrams
A off cut of trailer strapping comes in handy here to hopefully make feeding the replacement loom thru a lot easier
and in about 10 mins its on the floor taped up n labelled. Will be listed on Ebay as USA loom, Spares or Repairs. (start at £3.99)
and I soon have the loom fed thru the carbs.
i decide this is a good time to stop, as i am getting tired and my minds starting to wander all over the bloody place again.
At least I am not gonna have to sort this bodge out
but it feeds under the air box and between carbs 2 and 3 (Typical)
nearly thru
there is no connector between it and the loom, and I do consider just cutting the wires!
but I stop and have a drink n rest to let my brain try n work out the best solution.
right handle bar wires removed
bodged light switch is removed
that's better I can now get at everything a lot easier
and after removing the ignition and clock wires - just leaves the loom
and fan wires
now the bit i am not looking forward too
close up so i can check the wire colour codes
well here goes
The UK Spec loom, is ready to be fitted.
This has been hacked around a bit, but nothing I cannot resolve.
