6th October 2010 - Kurgan - Suzuki GS1000E - Custom

Published on 26 December 2022 at 08:19

Hi Folks..
well its day 2, and Altho I didn't get as far as I had hoped yesterday,

I think things went ok if a bit slow.

So before I start today its time for a quick sweep around the bike.

I am planning on tipping the bike on its side to remove the engine.

so these handlebars have gotta come off

The handle bars, are now in a safe place,

I just hope it all goes to plan.

of comes the starter & the alternator wires.

With the help of my Eldest son Timothy,

we carefully tip the bike on its right side and carefully lift the frame over the engine.

It only takes us just over half an hour so well happy.

now its time to remove the front end,

Again with Timothy's help we jack the frame up in stages and work the forks downwards

There out,

They took some shifting as they were a very snug fit.

And they look real nice as well.

there is not really much left on the Donor bike now, That I am interested in at this stage..

so its time to remove the jack and move the partial rolling chassis as far into the back of the workshop as we can

and after a nice sweep up.

The workshop is ready for Kurgan,

Now the real work starts.

Now lets get this clear this is not a comprehensive rebuild, but is one that has been forced onto me by a failing engine and I have decided to do several other jobs that needed doing at the same time.

I would love to strip him down 100% and give it a repray and clean everything up, but I just dont have the time or the required beer tokens to do this.

So this is all gonna be about what I have lying around or can scrounge to get Kurgan back on the road.

Hopefully Kurgan has only to last me another 2- 3 years whilst I start on the next project a Honda CB1000F custom that I have been given that looks as if it could be more suitable to my needs.

But to do that I will have to sell the donor rolling chassis and build another chop up with parts i have left over to raise the funds required to start on the Honda CB1000F

Off comes the seat, luckily just 2 bolts and they easy to get to...

and the number plate.

too save me breaking the dammed thing !

As I have broken one before!

off comes the right side panel, to save any further damage to the paintwork

baring all the electrics, gonna need access to these later

off comes 2 of the air filters

( i am starting to struggle with breathing now so just working on this side for a while)

and loosen the 2 jubilee clamps

this is the duel clutch mechanism

Bottom, the original cable & the top the Hydrolic foot clutch.

Off comes the clutch cable.

This will allow easy cable removal at the bottom end.

undo the top hydrolic clutch mech holder & remove the clutch arm pivot

(the r clip was missing :( )

and it slides free

this is the rear brake arm. When Me n Desperate Dan looked at this we decided to keep the rear brake lever.

this is the front mount for rear brake forward control

note to self - make sure i get the brake rod back in the right hole, As it works !

mmmmmmmm Typical the tanks full !

Off comes the petrol tank

Soon followed by the rear brake rod n controls

off comes the rear brake lever and spring

I disconnect the points wires under the seat

NOTE TOO SELF - make sure u connect them as they are in the pic

off come the front bottom mount.

Off comes the ignition coils and temp bodge of a coil mount

Off comes the right side front engine mount

Time to remove the gear/clutch forwards.

But first, I need to disconnect and remove the Kliktronic.

REMEMBER to mark position so hopefully refitting should be easier !

The foot clutch hydrolic rod, is next to come away.

the ignition wire

NOTE TO SELF THIS WAS LOOSE both the orange n black - could this be why it sometimes cut cylinders ????

off come the other 2 air filters and undo the jubilee clamps.

off drops the carbs & remove the choke and throttle cables

Space the final frontier :) :)

of come s the silencer

finally off comes the exhaust.

Not much really for some 5 hours work, but getting there.

more tommorow
