14th January 2011 - Kurgan - Suzuki GS1000E - Custom

Published on 28 December 2022 at 15:04

Yep I know its early. But you know whats its like, when you stop doing something and theres a problem thats worrying you at the back of your mind. and it wont go away.

Well after tossing and turning at 2am this morning I got up and gave in - went back down the shed, to see what this silicone stuff was and try n find out why its there, as well as to get the bottom engine mount bolt to do up tight.

John Wade - glad u managed, hope to see it running soon

Stephen Osborn - cheers John your not the only one - not had time to get down the shed today - hopefully tomorrow.

So after a few mins trying to see what I am doing by lying on the floor i give up and gently lower Kurgan on its side.
AHHHHHH thats better, ok i'm still having to lye down but at least I can sorta see whats there. Nope non the wiser - its soft and very stretchy and dont wanna come out.
40 mins later and not making an impression on the dam stuff -
found using a flat screwdriver is the best way to get into it but its still not playing ball.
looks like a chunk may be coming loose !
yep with the help of some pliers this chunk comes away - its deffo some form of silicon but not seen anything like it - its certainly adhered to the engine casing and dont wanna part
Here's another chunk

looks as if i am getting somewere
some 2 hours of digging away with a screw driver and a set if long nose pliers, and its still not all out. But I think enough of it is.
So digging around in my old tins of nuts n bolts found this natty nut with a lug I had welded on at some stage the hole n thread were the same as the bolt I am using, so in it goes.
in goes the bolt, but its takes a a while as it dont wanna line up with the nut
Am having to really push on the forwards mounting plate
I still couldnt see why that stuff was there ! which is why I only dug out enough for me to get the nut in there.
and up Kurgan comes back on its wheels. At least now its starting to look as if I have done something - these last few days don't feel as if I had achieved much at all.
put the old tarpalin away and we can carry on as I am wide awake still.
after a bit of a tidy up re found the foot clutch resevior & bits
with using a few small spacers on it bolts and on goes what was an old rear brake cylinder uit
And then cocnect it to the forward control.
Mount the old rear master brake resorvior to one of the gen cover bolts
an leave the pipe & clutch hydrolic unit on top of the engine,
on bolts the Kliktronic unit. knowing my luck I probally havent got the Kliktronic unit in the right place. So one of the first jobs after making sure the Jell battery is topped up - will be to try it out and make adjustments., so that it goes up n down
I was hoping to use the clutch cable from the donor bike but its some 6 inches to bloody short. so its back to the lash up cable i made in 2009 as a temp measure. Hopefully If I can get Kurgan back together and all running I will send it away and get a c
right now to mount the clutch cable and the hydrolic unit on top of the engine.
Nope thats wrong so apart it all comes again.
163216_10150392209415065_697187_n_10Thats better - everything lines up a treat and also connect the clutch cable to the clutch arm.
and in goes the hydrolic clutch unit and its all connected up. Wont be able to adjust this just yet till Ive put some oil in the engine.

I am well pleased with what I have achieved over the last 4 hours or so, still a niggle at the back of my mind about that silicon. But hopefully not enough to keep me awake.

Right folks i am gonna grab a few hours sleep .
